Bluesky’s Politics

Bluesky is by no means perfect alternative. The platform leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to its management. That being said, what it does right is ability to personal block lists, algorithms, and automatic content warnings, just to name a few. It’s a nice take on the decentralized social network that keeps things wholesome. You’d think people would want that.

And yet… In the US, people on the right complain about the other side politicizing everything. Ironically, their biggest complaint about Bluesky is about being a so-called “left-wing echo chamber” or that it sometimes “lacks political discourse”. That kinda sounds like you’re attempting politicize Bluesky, huh?

I should make one thing clear… Politicizing something isn’t a bad thing in itself. As far I’m aware, the word only became derogatory around the 2010s in order to censor people that demanded gun regulation in the wake of mass shootings. The phrase “now is not the time to talk about…” arose during that time. In essence, politicians are scolding us for demanding them to do their job.

So, the same people complaining about us politicizing everything are also complaining that Bluesky lacks political discourse? Uh, huh… Right.
